Helping my son is so much easier these days. I only wish I had found all of this out years ago. Although my story has a positive ending, I met many people during my research whose stories were not ending well. They were struggling to make it through each day, constantly sick with worry that something horrible would happen to their loved one before the Aspergers was brought under control. They were struggling to answer questions like: With the information I learned, I would be able to help other families overcome, and even prevent, the tremendous obstacles my son has had to conquer.
When they heard that I had done all of this research and that I was helping my son, they started asking for my help, too. If I could have had everything in some type of report or book, then things would have been so much easier for me, my wife … even my son. Once I got started, I realized that the same information may not be right for everyone.
And because I want to help as many people as possible, I created a separate report detailing the results of my surveys of parents and professionals.

This is in part because the able autistic parent community is invisibly disabled. In this way, the problems experienced by these moms and dads may be described as being organic in origin. Elsewhere these problems have been described as occasionally presenting as either organic neglect or organic abuse. These deficits in turn impact on their global parenting capacity.
The question of degree of affectedness vis-a-vis capacity to parent is spectrum dependant. Always in addressing parenting problems with this population parent capacity assessors and custody and access assessors need to ask themselves the primary question:

I’ve addressed this post to readers who have Asperger’s themselves, but these tips can just as easily be used to help a loved one who has Asperger’s. The most important rule I’ve discovered is this: Learn social skills by understanding the reasons behind social situations, not through rote memorization.
The Problem With Rote Memorization The most natural way that people with Asperger’s learn social skills is through rote memorization. We learn a specific response that works for a specific situation, and so when that situation occurs, we deploy that response. For instance, we learn through trial and error that if someone tells us their name, we should tell them our name in return or they will be upset.
Asperger’s Syndrome is NOT all about being defective, abnormal or impaired. It’s about having differences. Adults with Aspergers have an alternate way of seeing things and their solutions to life’s challenges are distinctive, not wrong.

Although he genuinely loves his spouse, the Aspie does not know how to show this in a practical way sometimes. An Aspie is often attracted to someone who shares his interests or passions, and this can form a good basis for their relationship. An Aspie needs time alone.
Often the best thing the NT partner can do is give her Aspie the freedom of a few hours alone while she visits friends or goes shopping.
A lot of men with Asperger’s (AS) – also called “high functioning autism” – have never been diagnosed and are regarded as being eccentric, a little odd or loners.
People with Asperger syndrome usually have good language skills, but they may still find it hard to understand the expectations of others within conversations, perhaps repeating what the other person has just said this is called echolalia or talking at length about their own interests. This can make it very hard for them to navigate the social world.
They may find it hard to form friendships. Some may want to interact with other people and make friends, but may be unsure how to go about it. Restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviours, activities or interests Repetitive behaviour and routines The world can seem a very unpredictable and confusing place to people with Asperger syndrome, who often prefer to have a daily routine so that they know what is going to happen every day. They may want to always travel the same way to and from school or work, or eat exactly the same food for breakfast.
The use of rules can also be important. It may be difficult for someone to take a different approach to something once they have been taught the ‘right’ way to do it.
